Capstone Portfolio

I am a dabbler and a dilletante, but most importantly, I am a doer.

The first two of those words can have negative connotations. However, I choose to take pride in my learning style for, in the words of my LI802 professor, Dr. Nancy Thomas, I am a kinesthetic learner: I learn by doing, by playing, by getting into the thick of projects.

My learning style is reflected in my choice of Capstone portfolio artifacts, which largely focus on archives and technology. The artifacts range from the electronic finding aids I created as a part of my practicum at the Kenneth Spencer Research Library to reflections on my experiences creating, planning, and coordinating an educational symposium as the Education Co-Chair of the Kansas City Area Archivists (KCAA).

SLIM has helped me to establish a theoretical foundation on which I have built my skill set. The artifacts I have included reflect the framework that I have erected upon that foundation: just as archival sources provide an individual, contextual example of a larger historical theory, my personal learning experiences have provided me with concrete applications of SLIM’s core theories.

Emporia State University

The oldest School of Library and Information Management (SLIM) in the western U.S., Emporia State University was founded in 1902 and serves a twelve-state area. Designed for non-traditional students, SLIM's weekend-intensive structure and large complement of online courses allow many full-time workers (myself included) the flexibility they need to complete their MLIS degrees.
